How To Meet Our Pets

We encourage you to visit us at the Bolingbrook PetsMart during regular adoption hours to meet all of our dogs and cats.  During non-adoption hours and days, several of our cats are available to be seen through their plexiglass cages at the front of the PetsMart store.  To adopt a pet from Humane Haven Animal Shelter, you should visit during our adoption hours and interact with the many dogs and cats available for adoption and complete the application process with one of our adoption agents.

If you wish to meet one of our dogs, please call us ahead of time to make sure the dog you're wishing to see will be at PetSmart during the adoption hours!

Where HHAS Pets Come From

Cats and dogs come to our shelter because they were lost, abandoned, or unable to be kept by a previous owner. Nearly 90% of our pets come from Bolingbrook Animal Control.

Our Pledge of Care

Our pledge is to first care for and protect the pets of HHAS while they are in our care, then to find and place them in a loving, caring household for the rest of their natural life. Each animal receives medical exams and tests, basic vaccinations and preventative medication. While in our care, HHAS provides premium foods along with medical care, clean, safe shelter and multiple daily doses of affection. All pets made available for adoption by HHAS are spayed or neutered.   To ensure a happy and healthy pet, our dogs are walked outdoors at least three times a day while our cats enjoy regular playtime with dedicated socialization volunteers.

The Adoption Procedure

To maximize the success of an adoption, we strive to help you find a pet that is compatible with your family and lifestyle. To ensure ample time to reflect on the importance of providing a Forever Home to an adopted dog or cat, we do not permit "same day" adoptions to occur.

    1. An adoption applicant must be at least 21 years of age and provide picture identification (Illinois drivers license) that states correct address and telephone number.
    2. Applicants must live within a 1 1/2 hour drive of the shelter.
    3. To complete an adoption, a minimum of 2 visits to the shelter must be made.
      • For dog adoptions: if dogs are already present in the home, we require that we meet the animals before the adoption is allowed to be completed.
    4. As there are a limited number of adoption counselors, unless you are the first client to arrive, please be prepared to wait for your turn.
    5. An adoption application must be completed and reviewed with an HHAS adoption counselor.  This takes approximately 30 minutes.  All members living in the household must be present during the interview.
    6. If there are multiple concurrent applications being processed for any one HHAS pet, it is the right/best match applicant(s) that is selected.
    7. If any potential pet matches are identified during the interview, then the applicant(s) will meet those pet(s).
    8. If the application for adoption is approved (notification occurs within 2 days), then the prospective adopter(s) are asked to give serious consideration about the decision to adopt and to leave a message as to their decision.
    9. Upon decision to adopt, an adoption contract and spay/neuter agreement is executed and the adoption fee is paid. HHAS accepts cash or checks as payment.
    10. Adoptive families must be willing to allow an authorized representative of HHAS to make an adoption follow-up(s) either in person or by telephone.
    11. We request that all family members of the household be present at the first interview.
